Frequently Asked Questions
What is Podiatric protective padding?
A variety of pads may be used to treat or prevent calluses and corns. Protective padding cushions the callus or corn or holds the foot and toes in a more comfortable position so that calluses or corns do not develop. You can purchase protective padding in different sizes and shapes, or purchase sheets of material that you cut to fit your needs. Moleskin is a soft fabric with a thin layer of felt attached to a sticky backing. It is used most often on the feet to protect the skin from rubbing against footwear or against itself. It can also help cushion the feet.
What are some types of pads that may be used for calluses and corns?
- Toe separators, which keep toes from rubbing together. They are used to prevent soft corns.
- Toe crest pads, which relieve pressure and friction and help prevent toes from rubbing together.
- Toe caps and toe sleeves, which fit over your toe and protect the sides and tips of the toe.
If you have diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, peripheral neuropathy, or other conditions that cause circulatory problems or numbness, consult your doctor before trying any treatment for calluses or corns.
What are toe crest pads?
Toe Crest helps relieve hammer, mallet or arthritic toes, while easing pressure on toe tips and reducing stress on the metatarsal shafts. Helps prevent corns, calluses and blisters, and comforts related forefoot pain. An adjustable elastic toe loop helps keep cushion in place without adhesives. Available in Deluxe Suede or Felt top covers.
How to apply toe crest pads?
With wide end pointing toward big toe and flat side facing floor, position cushion under little toes. Slip strap over the second, third or fourth toe. Pull loose end of strap gently until cushion fits comfortably against skin. Do not adjust strap too tightly. When removing from foot, slide off carefully to prevent strap from slipping out of slot.
How to care for toe crest pads?
Hand wash in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly. Press flat in towel to remove excess moisture. Air dry completely before reuse.
What causes calluses and corns?
Calluses and corns are caused by repeated pressure or friction on an area of skin. The pressure causes the skin to die and form a hard, protective surface. A soft corn is formed in the same way, except that when sweat is trapped where the corn develops, the hard core softens. This typically occurs between toes. Calluses and corns are not caused by a virus and are not contagious.
Repeated handling of an object that puts pressure on the hand, such as tools (gardening hoe or hammer) or sports equipment (tennis racquet), typically causes calluses on the hands.
Calluses and corns on the feet are often caused by pressure from footwear. Walking barefoot also causes calluses.
Calluses and corns often form on bunions, hammer, claw, or mallet toes, or on the bumps caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Calluses and corns on the feet may also be caused by repeated pressure due to sports (such as a callus on the bottom of a runner’s foot), an odd way of walking (abnormal gait), or a bone structure, such as flat feet or bone spurs (small, bony growths that form along joints).
